My healing modality is sickness. It is to know nothing and know that we all know nothing. It is to look up from a sick bed, in pain, afraid of death, innocent, yearning for love, and life. It is the humility we feel when we stand in awe of God's creation. It is to accept that we are not in control, while suffering, counting the seconds, hoping the pain will end, hoping for it to end, praying for the end of suffering. Watching, watching - in pain, hoping.

What is Highly Calibrated? The term “highly calibrated” comes from Dr. David R. Hawkins’ ground-breaking work in applied kinesiology and consciousness research. Dr. Hawkins confirmed that by testing human musculature response to various stimuli, not only was it possible to ascertain whether certain physical substances were harmful or beneficial to biological life, it was also possible to ascertain whether certain non-physical stimuli – such as ideas, thoughts, or images – had concomitant harmful or beneficial effects upon the body. Just as artificial sweeteners and fluorescent lighting when exposed to the human body made an individual’s muscle-system go weak, so did heavy metal music and a photograph of Hitler. Conversely, just as exposure to spring water or vitamins made a person’s muscles go strong, so did exposure to classical music or a photograph of Winston Churchill.

Hawkins then pointed out that the truth or falsity of anything could also be ascertained using the same muscle-testing technique. By uttering a statement, then quickly pressing down upon an outstretched arm, for example, a person’s deltoid muscle would suddenly weaken when exposed to a lie, allowing the arm to be pushed downward with relative ease. Conversely, the arm would strengthen when exposed to honesty, allowing it to sustain an outstretched position while being pressed down upon. Muscle-testing was found to operate on an ‘on-off’ principle similar to that of electricity.  If something was life-promoting or true the ‘electrical current’ was ‘on’ so to speak, providing the requisite muscle-energy for strength.  If something was life-degenerative or false the electrical current was switched ‘off,’ causing muscle weakness.

A significant discovery in this research was that accurate and consistent muscle-testing results were obtained even when test-subjects had no conscious awareness, knowledge or opinion of the stimulus being tested. Accurate responses occurred even if “the test subject was prevented from viewing the stimulus, such as a substance or picture placed in a manila envelope” (David R. Hawkins, Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis and Calibration of the Level of Human Consciousness, Veritas: West Sedona, AZ., p. 39). Testing a concealed photograph of Joseph Stalin, for example, would cause weakness; whereas a photograph of Mother Theresa, similarly concealed from view, would cause strength. Kinesiologic responses to music also seemed to be independent of the test subject’s personal attitude or opinion (Ibid., 87). A test-subject who likes heavy metal music, for example, would nevertheless go weak while listening to it, while going strong to classical music - a style contrary to his personal taste. It was also found that “the question being posed did not have to be voiced” and that by merely “thinking” of something “instead of speaking the thought had the same kinesiologic effect” (Ibid., 39). Holding in mind a mental image of a Swastika, for example, would cause weakness; whereas holding in mind a mental image of Jesus Christ would cause strength.

From these preliminary results Hawkins went on to discover that all phenomena had ‘degrees of truth’ – or relative degrees of energetic strength – which correlated to an exponentially rising scale of possible human consciousness levels, ranging from 1–1000:  1 being the lowest; 1000 being the highest. From this scale, Hawkins derived his now world famous Map of Consciousness. Hawkins found, for example, that fear calibrated low at a numerical level of 100, whereas love calibrated high at level 500. Hawkins then discovered a dividing-line at level 200. Anything above 200 was found to be life-positive, muscle-strengthening, and integrous; whereas anything below 200 was life-degenerative, muscle-weakening, and non-integrous. That which hovered above the integrity line at 200 was found to be more ‘powerful’ due to its inherent energetic superiority. Things like health, happiness, and material success were found to come more easily to those with integrity, to those demonstrating positive dispositions: courage, willingness, acceptance, reason and love. Integrity or life-positive mindsets – operating on a principle of ‘power’ - attracted like a magnet similar life-positive phenomena. Non-integrity, on the other hand, operating on a principle of ‘force,’ attracted its own like phenomena: sickness, unhappiness, and material depravity. Negative mindsets like shame, fear, lust, anger or pride invariably brought forth undesirable ends.

The link between positive mindsets with health and negative mindsets with disease “has been a universal clinical observation over the centuries.” Stress is known to have a direct correlation with “suppression of the immune system.” Presumptively it “disrupts the energy flow in the acupuncture meridians to specific organs,” which according to Hawkins, indicates the likely “psychosomatic link between emotions, attitudes, and physical disease” (Ibid., 41).

Hawkins thus re-confirms in modern, scientific language what the world’s Avatars – Krishna, Zoroaster, Buddha, and Christ – have emphasized for centuries: that the surest way to advance in consciousness, the surest way to health, happiness and success, is by being ‘good’ - by thinking, speaking, and acting truthfully, benevolently and with integrity. Being ‘bad,’ on the other hand, brings forth bad fruit.  In other words, holding negative mindsets, or trying to obtain desired ends ‘by force,’ by cutting corners through non-integrous means – such as lying, cheating, or stealing – attracts its energetically-equivalent negative consequences.

So what does all this have to do with Holistic Medicine?

Knowing that goodness, integrity, and positive mindsets are conducive to good health, holistic practitioners can align themselves with these ‘powerful’ energies to become more dynamic healing agents, to enhance their practices’ effectiveness. Furthermore, by educating patients on the importance of adopting positive mindsets and behavior, and by pointing out effective ways in doing so, holistic practitioners can help patients heal themselves.

Since Holistic Medicine’s implicit collective goal is to promote health, happiness and spiritual growth, its success or failure in this respect, like everything else, is dependent upon its integrity – the integrity level of its practitioners, methodologies, theories, and the multitudinous means put forth towards obtaining desired ends. It would therefore be quite valuable to find within the vast field of Holistic Medicine that which is highly calibrated, that which has integrity, truth, legitimacy, and efficacy; that which promotes long-lasting happiness and tangible health through its inherent energetic truthfulness and power.

Dr. David R. Hawkins found in his kinesiologic testing a ‘miraculous’ result:  a significant number of students who faithfully completed A Course in Miracles (ACIM) were immune to the effects of harmful physical and psychological stimuli.  While most other test subjects’ muscle-systems went weak from unhealthy material, ACIM students remained strong. By controlling their internal energy, by cleaving in consciousness to energetically superior attractor fields – namely love and forgiveness - ACIM students were able to overcome the deleterious effects of harmful stimuli.  By ‘tuning’ themselves to a more powerful frequency, so to speak, they became invulnerable to immunodefiency-causing material. In other words, they sustained strength and health by faithfully holding to a mindset of love and forgiveness – giving them the power to ‘miraculously’ transcend the usual effects matter.

There is no author listed for A Course in Miracles (1976), but the Preface describes how Helen Schucman received and wrote the book – over a period of seven years - via a series of channel-like inspirations from a Voice she describes as Jesus Christ, or the internal Voice that speaks for God.  Schucman, with the help of her colleague, William Thetford, and a number of other important collaborators, wrote the book in response to a department-head’s request to find a solution to their ongoing estranged office politics.  Volunteering to address the issue, and then asking sincerely for the Holy Spirit’s help, prompted the aforementioned divinely inspired “rapid, inner dictation” which Schucman received and “took down in a shorthand notebook” (A Course in Miracles, Foundation for Inner Peace:  Glen Allen, CA., 1975, p. vii).  This ultimately led to the life-changing opus which – as Schucman surprisingly came to realize – was A Course in Miracles.

The Course consists of three sections:  a Text describing the book’s fundamental theories and concepts; a Workbook comprised of 365 lessons the student is intended to practice – one lesson for each day of the year; and a Manual for Teachers, providing additional answers to remaining questions. The purpose of the book is to teach one how to perform miracles.  Since many of its readers and practitioners have seemingly learned to do so, how is this accomplished? The Course is designed to change one’s belief system.  Its goal is to eradicate one’s belief in separation, in duality, and replace it with an awareness and faith in non-duality.  It is designed to change one’s self-identification:  from an individualized ‘self’ to a collectivized infinite ‘Self’; from an ego to an at-one-ness with an all-encompassing reality of love.  When this true Identity is realized and fully embraced, miracles become commonplace, for from this lofty perspective, the rules of logic and duality no longer apply.

A Course in Miracles shows how belief in separation causes suffering:  fear, guilt, condemnation, sickness and death.  It also shows how by replacing this false belief in separation with the truth about one’s real Self, results in the opposite mindset:  love, peace, forgiveness, health and life.  From this latter perspective, suffering is allayed, and miracles of all magnitude may spontaneously occur – by an appeal to the Grace of God.

The Course teaches one in practical, step-by-step instructions how to remove “the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence.” (Ibid., 1)  Once an awareness of one’s unity with divine omnipresent love takes root, what is there to fear?  The book reasons that love’s opposite, fear, ultimately has no meaning or effect; for “what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.”  This realization brings the “peace of God,” for surely “nothing real can be threatened”; and “nothing unreal exists”. (Ibid., 1) Condemning one’s neighbor, suffering guilt as a result, and fearing their wrath and retribution reinforces one’s belief in separation.  Forgiving one’s neighbor, on the other hand, brings the opposite - love and peace - reinforcing one’s faith in (and conscious awareness of) their oneness with God and with the divine brotherhood of neighbors.

Knowing that separation is unreal, and hence powerless to harm, one is able to cleave to the higher energetic truth inherent within this perspective, giving one the power to transcend the illusory effects of physical matter – so long as God wills it, and one’s own karma permits it. When a miracle is performed one literally changes the course of both space and time, almost as if the malady had never occurred, never existed; one only believed it did for a short period in time.  A miracle, then, is a radical change in belief, so strong, that matter and time yields. This is much more than just mind over matter.  It is not something accomplished by a single mind.  It is accomplished by an infinite matrix of love, by a universal Mind – with which one becomes increasingly identified with.  This Mind knows not of fear, sickness, poverty, unhappiness, or death; for it is the source of all love, health, abundance, peace, and life. Cleaving in consciousness to the Self’s Will and Identity, one begins to relinquish the selfish will and identity, and embraces perfection:  the mindset of unconditional, unassailable happiness. Surrendering one’s personal will and identity to this eternal reality, it no longer matters whether the body’s physical sickness prevails, for one has accepted, forgiven, loved, and transcended physical phenomena.  Self-identification with the body has ceased.  Typically, it is only with this mindset of love and faith, and at-one-ness with the Self, relinquishing all attachment to the small self, that appeals to God to have a miracle performed through the body are answered. A Course in Miracles is designed to help facilitate this process:  the surrendering of the personal will and identity to God’s Will and Identity.  And according to Dr. David R. Hawkins, it works.  His clinical studies strongly suggest it; and his many personal accounts of self-healing harmonize with the Course’s fundamental chord.

So what does all this have to do with Holistic Medicine? Everything. Healing through miracles is perhaps the pinnacle of human health science.  It is healing through holism in the literal sense of the term, for it is the overcoming of the limitations of separation and matter by literally becoming one with the Whole.

Allopathic and holistic practitioners alike typically deal with the external manipulation of matter to heal matter.  Some practitioners manipulate the acupunctural, chakra, and astral energies to heal matter.  A Course in Miracles teaches one to heal matter – and ultimately transcend matter altogether - by literally becoming at-one with the infinite field of causal energy itself. All three levels of healing – physical, astral, and causal – are nevertheless useful and vital, and can be employed in unison to treat illness, as the film we recently reviewed, Voyage to Betterment, featuring Dr. David R. Hawkins, deftly demonstrates.

According to Hawkins, the power behind A Course in Miracles calibrates at roughly 600, the first level of Enlightenment – where one’s identity is fused with omnipresent love.  Interestingly, the kinesiologic technique itself also calibrates at 600, “the very point at which duality disappears into non-duality” (David R. Hawkins, Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis and Calibration of the Level of Human Consciousness, Veritas Publishing:  W. Sedona, AZ, p. 139). On this level, mind and matter become one.  The distinction between subject and object disappears:  “that which is witnessing and that which is witnessed are the same identity . . . everything is connected to everything else and unified by the Presence whose power is infinite, yet exquisitely gentle” (Hawkins, Transcending the Levels of Consciousness:  The Stairway to Enlightenment. Veritas:  W. Sedona, AZ, 2006, p. 276). A Course in Miracles is a golden portal to this realm, this level of enlightened consciousness.  It is a unique and powerful book with proven efficacy.  The voice that speaks for God that wrote it – echoing Christ’s original message of brotherly love and forgiveness – deserves our attention, not only as holistic practitioners, but as human beings.

Hay House Inc.:  Carlsbad, CA, 1995, p. 267).
