Intermittent fasting has been known to humans (and animals) since the beginning of time. Religious fasting in particular has been practiced in numerous religions across various cultures for centuries.

Nowadays, intermittent fasting has been gaining popularity in the health and weight loss circles, with multiple studies showing benefits that extend far beyond weight loss, such as improvement in insulin sensitivity, lipid levels, cellular regeneration and overall longevity.

I was exposed to religious fasting for the first time as a kid during Christmas. I'm not sure if my parents just made it up but basically we were suppose to fast from dusk on 12/23 to dusk on Christmas Eve making it a 24 hour fast. Even back then, the thought of not eating for so long was making me panic... a lot. I tried to do it but always failed miserably because I was dizzy or too hungry. To tell you the truth thinking back, my blood sugar levels had to be all over the place because I was hungry all the time. So after a few years I just gave up and never tried it again....Until recently.

16 hour random fast

My first intermittent fast was during a flight to Poland last December. It was a random decision but one of the best ones I have made, and I am planning to do it again for all future overnight flights. It was the smoothest flight I've had with no digestive issues whatsoever. So this is how it went.

I had dinner at home at 5pm on Saturday and haven't had any food till I got home in Poland at 3pm (EST+6). Considering the time change it has been 16 hours since I had my last meal and I felt really good. I went on to have normal dinner, watched some TV and went to sleep early. It was a really great experience and I highly recommend you trying it if you ever have any digestive issues (bloating, gas, constipation, belching, etc.) while flying or if you want to use an overnight flight to get a taste of extended fasting.

Now, onto my latest experiment.

22 hour fast

This latest fast occurred a couple of weeks ago and it was a bit more thought of. At this point I did a lot of research on intermittent fasting and wanted to try to see how my body reacts to an extended fast.

I had my last meal at 7pm on Monday, and didn't eat or drink anything with calories till 5pm on Tuesday. So here are my observations.

Firstly, I was shocked how long I could go without food and how great I felt. I had a busy day which definitely helped keep my mind occupied but I didn't suffer any cognitive decline or brain fog that I was expecting.

Secondly, I was surprised how much energy I had. I actually think I could have had a light workout that day.

Thirdly, I felt gentle hunger pangs and mild headaches about 3 times total, the worst one with a lot of rumbling in my stomach at lunch time. They all went away in less than 10 minutes. I felt less hungry than during some of my normal days.

There were a couple more things I noticed: I was very thirsty all day, and I got colder and colder the longer I fasted.

So when 4 pm arrived I was getting chilly and decided to have dinner at 5pm. I really wanted to last full 24 hrs but maybe next time.

Summary

Overall I had a great experience and I'm planning to do it about 1x a month for general health benefits. If you are interested in giving intermittent fasting a try or have any questions, shoot my an email. If you want to learn more about intermittent fasting, check out this great resource HERE .

Chances are you’ve heard the wellness community buzzing about honey’s golden child, manuka. Perhaps you’ve even purchased a jar or two for yourself, intent on taking full advantage of its nourishing benefits (and there are lotsof them). Sweet—you’re in the right place.

A quick refresher: Manuka honey is sourced primarily from New Zealand, to the point that New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) released a strict definition this year as to what can be classified as manuka honey. Top brands like Wedderspoon make it a priority to always abide by those rules—and, as a result, their KFactor 16 manuka honey is guaranteed to meet or exceed the Monofloral Manuka Standard from the New Zealand Government.

At the heart of these rules is the fact that manuka is simply healthier than other honeys. That’s because its nectar has more healthful properties than other nectars—and the extra immune boosting, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial dose means it can help you get over a cold faster, help heal your wounds faster, and may even help clear your skin.

Bottom line? Manuka honey is not only delicious, it’s also the OG cure-all to beat all cure-alls—which is a great reason to incorporate it into your routine when you can. These nine manuka honey hacks will help you do just that.

Meet Ron Thompson, Advanced Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, Nanaimo Hypnotherapy Center

HU: What inspires you?

Answer: Inspiration is not something that you have to look for. If you really want to achieve success in your life, then it can come from anywhere. Well for me, inspiration comes from my parents who always believe in me and support me to achieve my dreams. My passion, commitment and dedication in my mission: coach, counsel and mentor adults and students - to help them to become globally competent to achieve their dreams and goals.

HU: What is your biggest achievement to date (personal or professional)?

Answer: I have overcome 2 amputations of my legs, one kidney transplant and I’m blind. I trained for 4 years to become a clinical Hypnotherapist. That’s was big for me.

HU: What does a typical day look like for you?

Answer: Tracy is my wife and partner - we work from our home and so we are together day and night . We train tighter and work with clients everyday. At night we do recordings of sessions for our new website coming in the fall. We also to Skype therapy around the world so we seem to be always busy…

HU: What is your favorite current project and why?

Answer: Recording our seminars for different groups of people.

HU: If you could switch jobs with someone, who would it be and why?

Answer: I would love to become a inspirational and motivational speaker.

HU: What are your biggest professional challenges?

Answer: I think it is my eye sight and mobility issues. As well just keeping up to the changing social changes online.

HU: What’s the most rewarding aspect about your career?

Answer: People that email after working together and letting me know how life has changed for them.  For me that is very rewarding.

HU: What is your motto or personal mantra?

Answer: Changing ONE mind at a time.

HU: How do you maintain a healthy work/life balance?

Answer: I'm sure everybody knows to eat right and get their exercise every day as I do. More importantly is to turn off the phone and PC and enjoy life and your partner and do seeming for someone else and feel good about yourself. You will feel great.

HU: What is the greatest obstacle you have overcome?

Answer: Fear!  As many do, one thinks "Can I do this?", "Can I become who I want to be?".  After I lost my second leg I thought it was over but here I am and seeing clients everyday so have no fear, fill your destiny.

HU: What do you hope to share with the HU community?

Answer: Life … I have seen and gone through so much and still here.  I hope I can help people as well to see their path and stay on it.

HU: What do you hope to learn/gain from the HU community?

Answer: I love to learn, I love to see what people are doing and how they live their life.

HU:  Is there any other advice you would like to share with the HU Community?

Answer:  Give yourself credit. Often when we feel frustrated or upset we only concentrate on the bad things or the mistakes we’ve made instead of giving ourselves credit for what we do right.  Allow yourself to feel confident about the things you have accomplished, even if you’ve messed up in other areas.  Let go of the past.  It does not determine your future so why focus on it?  If you feel yourself ruminating on the past make a conscious effort to take your thoughts in another direction.

What are the health benefits of oranges or organic orange juice? If you’re like most people, you first think of the vitamin C. There’s no doubt, vitamin C is good for you and plays an important role in boosting immune function. That’s precisely why many people reach for oranges during cold season or when they get the first inkling of viral symptoms. But, this is only the proverbial iceberg tip when it comes to health benefits of oranges.

If you plan to sell goods via your site and/or allow your members to do it then Shopify integration module will help you to do this.

First of all if you are a seller you should register Shopify account here. If you don't plan to use online store from Shopify then you may select the cheapest plan 'Shopify Lite', which allows to use so called 'Buy Button' sales channel. All products would be stored in your Shopify account. You may manage them via Shopify Dashboard, which can be accessed using the URL like the following: https://your-store-com.myshopify.com/admin/ where 'your-store-com' is automatically generated store name (domain). You may add products via Shopify Dashboard -> Products.

When products were added lets configure the connection between your Shopify account and Shopify App in Holistic United. On the first step we need to create channel:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Settings -> Sales Channels.
  2. Click 'Add sales channel' button.
  3. Click 'Add' in 'Buy Button' section.

On the second step we need to generate JavaScript Buy SDK credentials:

  1. From your Shopify admin -> Sales Channels section, click Buy Button.
  2. In the 'JavaScript Buy SDK' section, click Create token.
  3. On the 'Storefront Access Tokens' page, click Create token.
  4. In the API Client drop-down menu, select Buy Button, and give it a Title.
  5. Click Create token.

Now you may see your newly created Acccess Token and App ID in the Buy Button tokens section. Use them to fill in corresponding settings ('API Key (Access Token)' and 'App ID') in settings form which can be found in Holistic United -> Shopify (Shop) -> Settings. Enter automatically generated Shopify store URL (in our example it's your-store-com.myshopify.com) in 'Domain' field of settings form and save the form. Now you are ready to create products in Holistic United Shopify App.

As we mentioned above main product's info is stored in Shopify, therefore you need to get Shopify product ID to register it in Holistic United Shopify App. To retrieve the product ID of a product you need to do the following:

  1. From your Shopify admin, click Products.
  2. Click the name of a product which you want to get ID for.
  3. Inspect the page URL. The product ID will be at the end of the URL. For example, in the URL https://your-store.myshopify.com/admin/products/12345, the product ID is 12345.

Use this ID in 'Product ID' field registering the product in Holistic United ('Plus' menu -> New Goods). Also 'New Goods' form in Holistic United has a madatory field 'Title'. It's recommended to use the same title which you have for this product in your Shopify Store to avoid buyers' misunderstanding. The other fields in the form are needed for goods browsing in Holistic United and can be set in any way you want.
